More than 1,000 people and dozens of chefs from around the country attended this year’s 11th annual Great Chefs Event at the URBN headquarters in the Navy Yard on Tuesday, June 14, for an evening of fun, food and charity.
The fundraising event began in 2006 by the founding partners of Vetri, Marc Vetri and Jeff Benjamin, to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research. In 2008, Vetri and Benjamin founded Vetri Community Partnership, which helps provide healthy school lunch and nutrition education to Philadelphia youth. In total, more than $750,000 was raised through sponsorships, Fund-A-Cure, and a live and silent auction.
6ABC’s Alicia Vitarelli and Marc Summers hosted the program and ten-year-old, Maya Rigler eloquently reminded the audience one of the reasons for this event, "Maybe one day we can make sure that no other kid needs to go through this." Maya, a cancer survivor, has raised more than $300,000 through her virtual lemonade stand!
Some popular dishes included Bobby Flay’s succulent green chili cheeseburgers, Alex Guarnaschelli & Michael Jenkins’ summer strawberry mostarda, Michael Symon’s smoked lamb ribs with fresh cucumber salad and Katsuya Fukushima’s whimsical cotton candy eel "maki roll."
Additional star chefs that came out to cook for this worthy cause included Robert Irvine, Jose Garces, Jonathon Sawyer and Cesare Casella.
