After one of our employees participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters, first as a “little” and then as a “big,” we decided to start the program at URBN. As a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters, a number of our employees mentor a student every other week, and on those days, you can spot “bigs” and “littles” around our Navy Yard campus playing games, eating lunch, doing arts and crafts or just enjoying getting to know one another. Over the course of the school year, their time together makes a significant impact, and we believe that youth mentoring fosters a bright future for our surrounding communities.
Neuroblastoma took Alex Scott’s life when she was just eight years-old. Her parents, Jay and Liz Scott, carry on her goal of helping doctors find a cure for the disease. Together, they fight cancer one cup of lemonade at a time through their organization, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, whose mission is to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer. Each year, we partner with them to host The Great Chefs Event, where dozens of star chefs from across the world and country serve up small plates, desserts and cocktails. And thousands flock to our communal building (Building 543) to support the cause. Each year, when the results of how much was raised through the silent and live auctions come in, we’re impressed and astounded. In 2016, more than $750,000 was raised!
ACHIEVEability aims to break the cycle of poverty by helping low-income, single parent and homeless families achieve self-sufficiency, primarily through housing and education assistance. Since 2008, we have had the honor of hosting ACHIEVEability’s largest fundraising gala, Food For Thought, where more than 25 chefs and restaurants serve food and beverage samples with music and live auctions. We’ve also partnered with this organization by taking part in their annual backpack and coat donation drive. In one year alone, our employees, along with other donors, gave more than 650 backpacks filled with school supplies, amounting to nearly $14,000.
Founded by Marc Vetri, a chef with global acclaim for his contemporary spin on classic Italian dishes, the Vetri Community Partnership, is a non-profit organization that bridges the gap between healthy eating and living. Their mission is to change the way kids eat lunch by ditching the assembly line and enjoying a mid-day meal instead. By eating together and sharing delicious food, while learning about healthy food choices, they leave ready to take on the rest of their day. Each year, URBN teams up with the Vetri Community Partnership to host The Great Chefs Event, where dozens of star chefs serve up delicious small bites, desserts and cocktails to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
For years, Team URBN has taken to the roads in support of the MS Society by partaking in MS: City to Shore Ride. Over the course of one weekend, a number of our employees ride from Philadelphia to Ocean City, New Jersey, and back. Named by Bicycling Magazine as the “Best Cycling Getaway in NJ,” the Bike MS: City to Shore Ride promises to be the best cycling experience on the east coast.
The holidays are a time of giving, and since 2010, we have hosted Operation Brotherly Love, where more than 650 families and 2,000 children from Philadelphia gather together for one day in December to receive a brand new winter coat and experience a memory they’ll never forget. Upon arrival, each family is greeted by a volunteer who hosts them throughout the day. The Philadelphia Mayor, local sports celebrities, the Phillie Phanatic and Wawa’s Mascot, Wally Goose, all share in an exciting afternoon complete with carnival games, prizes, dancing, entertainment, food and festive fun. Each child is presented with a gift and a new winter coat from Operation Warm.
We believe that early education is the best investment for a child’s success, and we want to help them attain a bright future. Serving over 6,000 children enrolled at more than 170 private and parochial schools, Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSFP) helps provide scholarships to children from low-income families in Philadelphia, thereby increasing their long-term economic and social success. Since 2006, we have partnered with the organization and its mission, and have hosted their benefit party at our Navy Yard campus, which brings together educational innovators, businesses and supporters to celebrate successes in education.
